Liberty Festival
WC2, Trafalgar Square
Saturday 30 August 2008 1-6pm
Trafalgar Square will be transformed with nine vibrant and distinctive festival zones devoted to everything from food to film. Buzzing with creativity, energy, colour and celebration, Liberty promises a journey of discovery with the emphasis on participation and fun.
Film and Video Zone programmed by Mutt 'n Jeff Pictures
The Film and Video Zone will feature a programme of short films by Deaf filmmakers and an area where you can create your own video postcard, which can then be shown on a video screen for all to see. A specially created guide will incorporate analysis, biographies, film information, stills and pictures of the featured filmmakers.
Club Zone programmed by Heart 'n Soul
The Club Zone will feature an inspiring range of talented and experienced young artists. In addition to performances by rock/pop solo artist Ellie Young and Anya Ustaszewskis electronic dance beats, young VJs will present original digital material, created for Liberty, which will be synched with the rhythms and music of the performances.
Carnival Zone programmed by Luminous Frenzy
Visitors to this zone can learn how to make carnival masks and costumes, as well create an environmentally friendly cotton bag with bright carnival paints and fabric. There will also be music and dance workshops and carnival-style music performances.
Street Arts Zone
Here you will be able to enjoy three new performances from:
Paper People : an exciting new commission through Shape (inspired by 2012 Commissions) and funded by London Councils. Kazzums interactive street theatre piece is inspired by the Olympics as a headline news event. Performers on a newspaper stand will use Chinese paper-cutting to create scenes and characters.
Graeae Rhinestone Rollers : a line dance extravaganza performed with eight electric wheelchair users, followed by participatory sessions featuring fully integrated BSL and audio description. Fun, celebratory and participatory.
The Medal Ceremony : an inspiring new collaboration between a team of UK artists led by Jenny Sealey of Graeae Theatre and Sue Broadway from the Australian street theatre company Strange Fruit. The Medal Ceremony looks at the common experiences we all share with Olympic athletes - aspirations, struggles and challenges. A collaboration involving live audio description by Amit Sharma, new music by Lewis Gibson and sign song anthems.
Comedy and Cabaret Zone
This zones programme is packed with accessible comedy and cabaret performances, all housed in an intimate setting with leading actor and comedian Liz Carr. Look out for leading comedy acts direct from Edinburgh as well as musical cabaret performance and song.
Circus Zone programmed by Cirque Nova
Enjoy jaw-dropping aerial performances by emerging disabled aerial artists using a specially erected rig. True to its name, the Circus Zone also offers a range of interactive circus skills workshops in Diabolo, hula hoop, juggling and stilts.
Children's Arts Zone programmed by theatre director Daryl Beeton
